What is Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure that prevents pregnancy by blocking the vas deferens—the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. After the procedure, sperm can no longer mix with semen, making pregnancy extremely unlikely.

The procedure:

  • Is performed in the office

  • Usually takes about 20–30 minutes

  • Uses local anesthesia

  • Does not affect testosterone levels, sexual function, or libido

Benefits of a Vasectomy

A vasectomy offers several advantages, including:

  • Over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy

  • Permanent birth control solution

  • Quick outpatient procedure

  • Minimal discomfort and recovery time

  • No ongoing birth control maintenance

  • Does not affect sexual performance or hormone production

What to Expect During the Procedure

Your provider will numb the area with a local anesthetic before making a small opening to access the vas deferens. Each tube is sealed to prevent sperm from reaching the semen.

The procedure is typically completed in less than 30 minutes, and most patients return home shortly afterward.

Recovery

Most men recover quickly and are able to resume light activities within a day or two.

During recovery, you should:

  • Rest for the first 24–48 hours

  • Apply ice packs as directed

  • Wear supportive underwear

  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for about one week

  • Follow your provider's post-procedure instructions

Important to Know

A vasectomy is not immediately effective. Sperm can remain in the reproductive tract for several weeks after the procedure.

You'll need to:

  • Continue using another form of birth control until your provider confirms the absence of sperm through a follow-up semen analysis.

  • Attend your scheduled follow-up appointment to ensure the procedure was successful.

Vasectomy Q & A

  • No. A vasectomy does not affect testosterone production, erections, ejaculation, or sexual desire.

  • Most patients experience only mild discomfort during the procedure thanks to local anesthesia. Some soreness and swelling afterward are normal and usually resolve within a few days.

  • Although reversal procedures exist, they are not always successful. A vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of birth control.

  • Once follow-up testing confirms there is no sperm in the semen, a vasectomy is more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
