Meet
Melani Kekulawala, M.D., M.P.H.
Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician | Family Medicine Obstetrics
Dr. Melani Kekulawala, affectionately known as “Dr. K,” is a board-certified family medicine physician with advanced fellowship training in surgical obstetrics. As one of the few female physicians delivering babies in Monroe, she is passionate about providing compassionate, evidence-based care that empowers women to make informed decisions about their health.
Dr. K believes healthcare should be a partnership. She takes the time to listen to each patient, understand their individual goals and concerns, and explain their options in a way that feels approachable and easy to understand. Her goal is to help every patient feel comfortable asking questions and confident in the decisions they make about their health.
With training in both family medicine and obstetrics, Dr. K cares for the whole family. She supports women through pregnancy and delivery and continues caring for mothers and their children as they grow. Her obstetric care includes prenatal visits, pregnancy support, and delivery, followed by postpartum care for new mothers. She especially enjoys welcoming first-time mothers and helping them feel prepared and supported throughout pregnancy and the transition into parenthood.
Dr. K also has a special connection with teenagers and adolescents. She understands that young patients may have questions or concerns that can be difficult to discuss and works to create an environment where they feel respected, comfortable, and heard. Her approach emphasizes education, open communication, and shared decision-making.
Dr. K earned her Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan and her Doctor of Medicine from The University of Toledo. She completed her Family Medicine residency and Surgical Obstetrics fellowship at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. After living and training in Monroe for the past four years, she is proud to care for the community she now calls home.
Her commitment to women's health extends beyond her clinical practice. Dr. K has participated in public health initiatives in South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia, and Kenya. These experiences gave her a broader perspective on healthcare and reinforced her commitment to patient-centered, compassionate care.
In addition to obstetric care, Dr. K provides comprehensive family medicine services, including family planning and contraception, weight and obesity management, mental health support, adolescent health, annual wellness visits, preventive screenings, and routine healthcare for patients at different stages of life.
As a physician who combines family medicine with advanced obstetric training, Dr. K offers patients the benefit of continuity — caring for women through pregnancy while also providing ongoing healthcare for their families. She is proud to be part of Monroe OBGYN and to serve the community she has come to call home.
Outside of medicine, Dr. K enjoys traveling, playing pickleball, and spending time with family and friends over board games.
