MONROE, Mich., August 28, 2026 — Monroe OBGYN has welcomed Melani Kekulawala, MD, MPH— known to her patients as Dr. K — as its newest family medicine physician, expanding the practice's ability to care for women and their families through many different stages of life.
Dr. Kekulawala is board certified in family medicine and completed advanced fellowship training in surgical obstetrics at ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital. She can care for a woman before, during and after pregnancy, deliver her baby, see that baby for newborn visits and continue caring for the child as they grow.
For a new parent, that can be as practical as having her postpartum appointment and her baby's checkup during the same trip — and, when appropriate, with the same physician.
But pregnancy is only one part of her work. Dr. Kekulawala also sees patients for adolescent health, family planning and contraception, weight management, mental health and general family medicine. Adolescent health is an area she is particularly invested in.
“I have lived and trained in Monroe for four years now, so this is the community I call home. What I want is for a patient to trust me enough to tell me what is actually going on. That matters when I am delivering a baby. It matters just as much with a fifteen-year-old who would rather not be in the room,” said Dr. Kekulawala.
Dr. Kekulawala earned her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toledo and her Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan. Her work in women's health has included public health initiatives in South Africa, Ghana, Ethiopia and Kenya, and her research on strengthening obstetric care has been published in PLOS Global Public Health, BJOG and BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth.
More of a family's care, in one place
Dr. Kekulawala joins Dr. Young on Monroe OBGYN's family medicine team. Both physicians are trained in family medicine and obstetrics, giving patients the choice of a female or male family medicine physician who can care for children and adults, provide pregnancy care and deliver babies.
For families, that can mean fewer doctors, appointments and stops. A mother and newborn can have appointments during the same visit. A child can continue seeing the family physician who was there at birth. Parents, teenagers and other members of the household can establish care in the same practice.
Many routine needs can be handled there as well. Monroe OBGYN offers ultrasound in-house, with ProMedica Labs located onsite for laboratory services.
Family medicine builds on more than four decades of women's healthcare at Monroe OBGYN. Dr. Soudabeh Ahadi founded the practice in 1982 and continues to practice alongside her son, Dr. Martin Pakideh. Today, some of the women the practice cared for decades ago are returning as grandmothers, while a new generation comes through its doors.
